We are happy to announce that the ISLA (Initiative for Sustainable Landscapes) Annual Report 2022 is now published. The report outlines the efforts made to create significant and meaningful impact, despite facing challenging social, environmental, and political circumstances throughout the year. The report details the outcomes achieved according to the priorities outlined in our 2022 Annual plan for each of the three regions where IDH projects are located.
In Africa, the primary focus was on formalizing landscape governance arrangements and ensuring program ownership by local government authorities. This was achieved by increasing the number of multistakeholder agreements, known as Production Protection and Inclusion (PPI) Compacts, to a total of 11, with 4 of them being implemented in Kenya, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ethiopia. The goal was to adapt the PPI approach to better suit the specific needs of each local context and to facilitate access to green finance for smallholder farmers.
Moving to Asia, our objectives centered on strengthening existing Compacts in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and West Kalimantan in Indonesia, as well as attracting investments to achieve Compact targets. In Vietnam, we focused on scaling up SourceUp, a platform promoting low emissions and responsible coffee production, by encouraging companies to commit to purchasing from the Compact areas. Discussions with the Vietnamese government and coffee companies began to develop detailed plans for meeting EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation) requirements for the coffee sector in Vietnam, including piloting solutions within the three existing Compacts.
In Latin America, IDH focused on supporting the exit strategy of four PPI Compacts, with three of them located in Mato Grosso, Brazil, and one in the Balsas Region, Maranhão State. Additionally, efforts were directed towards institutionalizing the PCI Institute, responsible for embracing the Green Growth Plan, and expanding the business model for deforestation-free calves production to other regions facing high deforestation risks. A Low Carbon Agriculture facility (ABC TA Facility) was also established.
Furthermore, in response to new legislative developments in Europe, we added a workstream to address the forthcoming EU regulation on deforestation-free products to our 2022 priorities.
